How To Find Your Personal Aesthetic

I've been on a journey, of sorts, to find my own personal aesthetic. I shared a detailed video about this over on my TikTok and wanted to share my thoughts here as well. I started thinking about my own personal aesthetic a few months ago and it has helped me not only shop smarter but be more confident in who I am. I love that we are all unique in what we like and dislike especially when it comes to our personal style. There are women who gravitate toward minimalistic pieces and some who gravitate toward bold colors and prints. Some like comfy and casual while others prefer dressy. Someone, who I love dearly, told me recently that I reminded them of the state of Rhode Island and the city of Charleston if those two places were a "person". I can't describe how much that meant to me because I do consider my personal style to be a mix of grand-millennial meets classic/timeless fashion meets preppy. We can walk into a clothing store and be overwhelmed OR we can walk in confidently knowing what we are after.
So how do you find out what your personal aesthetic is?
Pay attention to what you're drawn to- Do you gravitate toward bright colors? Neutrals? Particular colors? Fabrics? Pay attention to what you're reaching for and see if every piece has a common theme.
Get visual- I am a visual learner so sometimes it helps me to put together a vision board to get all of my thoughts on paper. I love Pinterest because I can search for different aesthetics and gather inspiration from others.
Find pieces that you feel confident in and figure out what colors best suit you- when you find a great pair of jeans or a dress that makes you feel confident, lean into that style and shop accordingly.
Shop smarter- Once you have an idea of the particular style or aesthetic you like, shop smart. Only choose pieces that you know, without a shadow of a doubt, that you will wear confidently. I follow this rule with shoes and accessories too!
Own it- who cares if your aesthetic isn't "trendy" or "typical". If you want to wear a ballgown around town or you want to wear fun athletic outfits, go for it! Your aesthetic is YOUR aesthetic and it doesn't matter if you haven't found your aesthetic on a Pinterest board or on the internet. Be a trendsetter!
A few of my favorite stores/brands include Target, J.Crew Factory, Belk (specifically Crown & Ivy), Amazon, and TJMaxx.
