We spent six days in beautiful Ireland earlier this month. I can't explain how much I fell in love with the beautiful country. The first leg of our trip was spent in Belfast, Ireland, which is in Northern Ireland. The second leg of our journey was spent outside of Dublin, Ireland in a little town called Mayhooth. I plan on sharing detailed blog posts on those towns and the attractions we enjoyed, but this post is solely for what you actually need to take on your trip there if you're planning a visit. I scoured Pinterest for WEEKS researching outfits and tips for packing and found some helpful tips, but now that I had real boots on the ground (no pun intended), I know exactly what you need.
Our trip was October 2nd through October 8th and the weather was mild. The first few days the weather was cool but the second half of our trip was mild. I overheard someone in a restaurant say they couldn't believe it was 70 degrees since they had a really cool Summer. However, we still needed jackets due to the wind and sometimes drizzling rain, but it certainly wasn't miserably cold.
So here's what I packed for a 6 day trip to Ireland and what I think you need!
1. Charging Block: You need a special charging block for your electronics. Ireland/Europe operates on a 230V supply voltage and America operates on a 110-120V supply voltage. The plugs are totally different than ours as well so your chargers won't fit the plugs. Here is the charging block we used and had great success with. Don't let your electronics get fried!
2. Boots/Waterproof shoes: I was so glad I packed my rain boots. Although we did not get to visit the coast, Ireland is still a very damp country. We did a ton of walking and it rains daily in Ireland so you will need waterproof shoes and/or rain boots. I did pack a pair of suede boots that I got at Target and they held up great as well. Additionally, I packed a pair of tennis shoes to wear that were comfy and water-resistant. Fall in Ireland is NOT for flats, flip-flops, or open-toed shoes.
3. Jackets: You ideally need a rain jacket to wear since it does rain almost daily. I would also suggest a quilted jacket or medium-thickness coat/jacket to stay warm. It is really windy and it felt extra cool on those cloudy/windy days. The green quilted jacket below is Social Sanctuary brand and I got it at Sam's Club for $26.
4. Warm Socks: Chances are you'll be doing a ton of walking around Ireland, so you need to make sure you have thick warm socks. I found a pack of boot socks on Amazon and they were amazing at keeping my feet warm and padded. You can find those here.
5. Umbrella: I took an umbrella in my carry-on that I already had just in case we got caught in a rainstorm. Thankfully we didn't use it once while we were there but be prepared!
6. Medicines/Toiletries: I am always overly prepared so I took a ton of medicines and toiletries with me. Some of the items went in my carry on and the others went into my checked bag. I had everything neatly packed up and totally forgot to post a picture of it. However, here is a list of what I packed in my carry-on (leopard print bag below that I love and found at TJMaxx):
Dramamine-I took the dissolvable tablets with me and ended up needing them after getting sick on a van we took to the hotel.
Tylenol & Ibuprofen
My daily vitamins
Aquafor mini lip balm
Honey Pot Women's Wipes
Tampons/pads (just in case because of PCOS)
Liquid I.V packets
Antibacterial wipes
Daily makeup items including my foundation (has to fit in a quart-sized clear plastic bag for TSA to approve it and each item has to be below 3 ounces in a carry-on)
Here is a list of toiletries I packed in my checked bag:
Toothpaste
Toothbrush
Bar of soap
Travel-sized shampoo & conditioner (Monday brand)
Teeth whitening strips
Deodorant
Razor & replacement head
Teeth flossers
My entire CeraVe skincare routine
Lotion
7. Passport: You will be surprised at how many places you need to present your passport while traveling abroad. The airports obviously required your passport but we also had to show it when we checked into our hotel. This is also something you don't want stolen in a foreign country so make sure you keep it safe at all times. I found the cutest bag below at TJMaxx that was just large enough for my phone, passport, credit card, lip balm, and medicines I needed. It stayed strapped across my chest anytime we were out in public.
8. Layers: When packing your outfits, make sure you're packing sweaters and long-sleeve shirts you can layer under your jacket. You will need jeans, leggings, and long pants as opposed to shorts. If you plan on wearing a skirt, I would recommend tights as it is chilly in October. Above all, pack comfortable clothing and clothing that you can easily mix and match.
9. Washcloths: This might sound very odd, especially if you're an American, but on my next trip I will be packing washcloths. Both hotels we stayed in (which were 5-star hotels by the way and I totally recommend them) did not give you washcloths. We had to ask the first hotel for washcloths and then the second hotel only gave us one washcloth between the two of us so I had to ask AGAIN for a washcloth. I don't know about you, but I am not interested in sharing a washcloth with my husband or anyone for that matter. LOL
I hope this list helps you as you plan your trip to Ireland!
